What is a Hyunsasa (顯士)?

Hyunsas, using the characters 'Hyun' (顯 - to reveal) and 'Sa' (士 - scholar/gentleman), is the official term for individuals who have manifested transcendent abilities to combat various cracks and异界 (otherworldly) entities (collectively known as 'Goei') that appear in modern society.
They are affiliated with the government agency 'Hyunmuncheong', undergo systematic training, and serve as a shield to protect the safety of the citizens and safeguard society from unknown threats. All Hyunsas must be registered with Hyunmuncheong upon awakening, and they are assigned to appropriate departments based on the type and danger level of their abilities.

Furthermore, after awakening, Hyunsas can manifest a special protective armor, known as 'Beopbok' (法服), formed from their individual soul and spiritual energy (Yoryeok).
Beopbok is a type of spiritual armor that protects the Hyunsasa's body and soul, functioning to shield the wearer from contamination within cracks, invasion by otherworldly entities, and spiritual energy backlash.
During missions, they can switch between their regular attire and Beopbok. The form and performance of Beopbok vary depending on the individual's ability lineage, rank, and mental stability.

What is the ranking system for Hyunsas?

The rank of a Hyunsasa is determined by a comprehensive evaluation of their capabilities, the destructive power and potential danger of their abilities, and their controllability. Ranks can be updated through regular and irregular assessments. The main system is as follows:

• Celestial Rank (天級) : The highest rank, capable of handling national-level disaster situations alone or with a small team. They have the highest strategic importance and constitute less than 0.1% of all Hyunsas.
• Gold Rank (金級) : A rare strategic rank capable of independent operations. Granted to those who can perform the role of multiple higher-ranked Hyunsas alone or possess unique, irreplaceable abilities.
• High Rank (上級) : An upper rank capable of successfully dealing with wide-area threats. They serve as the core force in most field operations.
• Middle Rank (中級) : A mid-tier rank comprising experienced Hyunsas who have participated in numerous operations. They serve as the backbone of field operations.
• Novice Rank (初級) : A rank capable of dealing with small-scale cracks and low-risk Goei. Most Hyunsas belong to this rank.

Eight Years After the Great Catastrophe, How Did 'Hyun-sa' Become the Shield of the Nation?

1. A Catastrophe Without Omen

Eight years ago, the world crumbled silently. There were no earthquakes, no prophecies. One day, suddenly, thirty-two passengers on the subway began to bite each other, and a tiger from a mountain mural walked out and swallowed the village. The creatures crawling out of the sea were no longer fish. The emergence of the Strange Beings through unexplained disasters destroyed all common sense.

In that chaos, a small number of humans began to adapt to an unknown power, Yoryeok (妖力). People called them Hyun-sa. Those who donned the 'Law Robe' of spiritual armor faced the monsters pouring out from the cracks in their own way.

2. The Abandoned Heroes

The initial response was disastrous. The formerly government office 'Hyunmuncheong' was established early, but it was utterly ineffective without a system to classify and properly utilize them. Awakening was particularly concentrated among teenagers and young adults. When a thirteen-year-old child stood in front of the strange beings wearing the law robe, the media went wild, calling it the birth of a 'Magic Boy'. However, without protection or training, the children were consumed as shields by the adults. When they bled, it became a heart-wrenching true story, and when they died, they were forgotten after a single memorial service.

Two years after the world changed, something burst. The 'Red Night Incident', in which a number of Hyun-sas and senior officials fell victim to the government's inhumane experiments, occurred. This terrible tragedy paradoxically became the catalyst for reform. The former Chief and those involved resigned one after another; surviving Hyun-sas led a complete reorganization of Hyunmuncheong, assisted by cooperative intelligent strange beings, it was reborn as a systematic and clean institution.

3. The Shade of a New Era, Unfinished Tasks

However, even after eight years, the unresolved issues still remain shadows of the new era.

The most pressing issue is the existence of humans tainted by Yoryeok, commonly referred to as "A-gwi (餓鬼)". A-gwis exhibit extreme violence due to the loss of sanity, hence the principle is immediate execution on-site. However, ethical debates are intensifying among the families of victims and some civic groups regarding whether it is right to kill beings who were human until yesterday. As of now, there is no way to revert an A-gwi back to human, and this cannot be resolved even with the law robes of the Hyun-sas, leading to deepening social conflicts.

Moreover, it's also a problem that the average age of Hyun-sas is too low. The average age of awakening is in their teens to twenties, with most unable to finish their studies. In particular, among minor and young Hyun-sas, controversy over their rights to education, safety, and freedom of career choices is unceasing. Although it's argued that higher-ranked Hyun-sas must be forcibly affiliated with the Hyunmuncheong to reduce societal chaos, there are criticisms that it imposes too early responsibilities on those who have not even determined the direction of their own lives.

Amid these controversies, the public has grown accustomed to the existence of the strange beings and Hyun-sas have become a recognized professional occupation. For some, they are hunters preventing disasters, while for others, they are idols waving glow sticks. From the ashes, South Korea is walking again with such precarious order.
