3. Geography 3.1. Physical Geography

Sangcheon Metropolitan City is bordered by the East Sea to the east, with coastal cliffs and sandy beaches coexisting along its shoreline. To the west, the Taebaek Mountain Range envelops the city like a screen, leading to gentle hills and mountains as one moves inland. The Yesan River flowing from the northwest to the southwest traces the western boundary of the Sangcheon metropolitan area, creating alluvial plains and river wetlands in the lower reaches and estuary area. Overall, it exhibits a maritime climate with small temperature variations and relatively mild winters.

3.2. Human Geography

Sangcheon Metropolitan City borders North Gyeongsang Province to the south and Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province to the north, growing as a metropolitan city situated between the East Sea coast and the Taebaek Mountain Range. The East Sea coast has developed commercial, tourism, and port functions, while inland consists of a mix of traditional rural areas, new towns, and industrial complexes. Along the Yesan River, the eastern side features the Sangcheon urban center alongside major residential and business districts, while the western side is centered around the new town of Gangseo-gu and its surrounding residential areas, leading to multiple living zones diverging along these axes.

3.3. Administrative Divisions

Sangcheon Metropolitan City consists of 9 autonomous districts and 1 autonomous county.

Items in bold type represent the locations of district and county offices.

4. Politics
Sangcheon Metropolitan City Political Cartogram
The political landscape of Sangcheon Metropolitan City, while belonging to the Yeongnam region, is adjacent to Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, reflecting the complex urban characteristics of traditional industry structures and new urban developments. It can be summarized into two main factions: the conservative side of the Eastern Coastal Zone and the progressive side of the Western Inland New Towns, along with a competitive dynamic between the original urban center and university towns.

Conservative Dominated Areas include traditional affluent neighborhoods like Wolam-gu, areas influenced strongly by military bases such as Yeondong-gu, and the original city of Taegong-gu, where wealthy residents remain amidst urban hollowing. These areas consistently show strength for conservative parties, particularly Wolam-gu, which is noted as a significant conservative stronghold of Sangcheon.

Progressive Dominated Areas comprise some electoral districts of Gangseo-gu, which has seen a large influx of young residents due to new town development, Cheongun-gu, dense with university students and a high percentage of voters in their twenties, and Sinseong-gu Gap, which hosts many artists and media professionals. Additionally, Saeyeong-gu Gap is also classified as a traditional stronghold for progressivism due to the influence of production workers and unions.

Contested Areas represent the most notable feature of Sangcheon politics, where the diverse population dynamics result in unpredictable election outcomes. Gangseo-gu Gap is where young citizens from new urban areas clash with the conservative native population, Cheongun-gu Eul sees a divergence in voting intentions between college students and landlords, Saeyeong-gu Eul witnesses coexistence between unions and white-collar workers, and the electoral districts of Jangjeon-gu and Yongyeong-gun combine labor and rural populations. The voting tendencies in these contested areas play a critical role in balancing the political landscape of Sangcheon.
