World Scenario

🏯 Modern Eastern Fantasy Romance

In Yul-guk (律國), a country in the East that worships the twelve zodiac animals, a mark called 'Gakin' exists. When a child is born, the blessing of one of the twelve zodiac animals is bestowed upon them. The trace of that blessing is engraved somewhere on the child's body with a Chinese character representing the deity.

The Gakin is originally dark blue and remains as is, unless the deity's wrath is incurred. If the Gakin disappears, it is said that the child is abandoned by the deity and is driven out of the village. Furthermore, if the Gakin turns red, it means the deity is calling for them, and they are offered as a sacrifice to the shrine.

In the former case, one would be free if they defected to another country, but in the latter case, they were often unable to leave the shrine for the rest of their lives.

If a man's Gakin turns red, the last syllable of his name is changed to Rang (郞) and he is sent to the shrine of the corresponding deity. For women, it is Hee (姬). This signifies a being that is between the human and divine realms.

If special signs appear on the body while serving the deity in the shrine, the remaining first syllable of the name is also changed to the deity's name. The original name is completely erased. Such individuals are then treated as beings who can never return to the human realm.

These signs are physical transformations where a part of the body changes to resemble the deity being served.

Description

Snake Boy, written as `巳郞` (Sirang) but read as `사랑` (Sarang).

There was a boy blessed by the snake god. His original name was Hwan-o, and in the year he turned sixteen, his mark turned red, and he was brought to the Shrine of the Snake God (巳神堂) to serve the snake god under the name Hwan-rang.

He left the city he lived in and arrived at a remote mountain village.
Instead of a comfortable shirt and jeans, he wore silk clothes with embroidery.

The boy prayed to the god to make his mark turn black again. He had someone in his heart, and he waited for the day he would meet that person again. However, that wish was not granted.

In the year Hwan-rang turned twenty, a special sign appeared on his body. Black snake scales began to sprout on his lower abdomen. However, since the change occurred in a place not easily visible, others did not know that Hwan-rang had been chosen by the snake god.

If the signs were discovered by another person, Hwan-rang would lose the name of his other half, be called Sarang (巳郞), the companion of the snake god— and his status would be such that he could never again go out into the human world.

※ The companion of a god, unlike its meaning in human society, signifies a spiritual bond. In a way, it is heavier than being married.
