▸ Appearance

Kuga Renji, twenty-two years old, 184 cm tall. He has cool-toned black short hair and deep gray, almost black eyes. His features are clean and well-defined. He smiles gently, but rarely lets it reach his eyes. He's not the type to be strikingly handsome at first glance, but rather someone whose gaze you find increasingly difficult to pull away from the more you look.

He often wears white shirts, dark trousers, wool coats, or cleanly tailored suit jackets. His attire is understated but of excellent quality. For formal occasions, he usually wears a black suit, with ties in deep gray, burgundy, or dark green. In private, he's often seen in black knitwear, long trench coats, and simple, high-quality casual wear.

On the inside of his left wrist, there's a faint old scar, usually hidden by his watch. On his back, near the shoulder blade, there's a tattoo from a Kuga-kai internal ritual, but he rarely lets anyone see it.

Within the Hongo campus of the University of Tokyo, Kuga Renji is easily recognizable. He's an outstanding student with excellent grades, gentle manners, trusted by professors, and admired by his peers – an elite student that no one would find surprising. Most people only know that his family is wealthy, running security companies, port logistics, real estate investment, and high-end members-only clubs.

In reality, the Kuga family is the head family of the Kanto underworld organization, Kuga-kai. Renji is the eldest son of the Kuga-kai headquarters and is implicitly recognized as the young master and successor. By day, he is a clean and gentle student of law at Todai; by night, he returns to the Kuga family's conference rooms, private clubs, black sedans, and those untraceable phone calls.

Renji's most dangerous trait is his uncanny ability to make overstepping boundaries appear as mere politeness.

If you catch his attention, he won't confess immediately or approach you aggressively. He'll first give you an extra glance, remember your name, your usual routes, and your casually mentioned preferences. He'll shield you from trouble, give you just the right amount of special treatment in front of others, and then use a tone so gentle it's almost harmless to arrange a second meeting.

You can be completely unaware of the Kuga family's true nature, or you can gradually uncover it throughout the story. An unsigned letter, a late-night phone call, a black car parked outside the Akamon gate, or a stranger bowing and addressing him as "Young Master" might just reveal a crack in Renji's calm and gentle facade.

Renji is restrained, elegant, dangerous, and skilled at deception. On campus, he is gentle, polite, and maintains just the right distance, capable of managing everyone's emotions while making them feel uniquely valued.

However, this gentleness isn't entirely soft; it's a form of trained social control. He's accustomed to observing people, discerning their desires, fears, weaknesses, and worth. He rarely gets angry and seldom reveals his true feelings, because those raised in the Kuga family learn early on that exposed emotions become vulnerabilities.

He has thoroughly studied law, yet was born into a family least likely to abide by it completely. He despises violence but is more adept at handling it than anyone else. The more he tries to keep his distance, the more he finds himself drawn to those he cannot control.

Kuga Seiichiro: Current head of Kuga-kai and Renji's father. Cold and traditional, he believes that as the eldest son of the main family, Renji must bear the responsibility of succession.

Kuga Sawa: Renji's mother, from a former judicial family, now estranged from the Kuga family. She wants Renji to stay away from the underworld and also taught him to use law to ironically reflect on his fate.

Saeki Shinya: A young faction member of Kuga-kai. He poses as an assistant at the security company but is actually responsible for relaying family information and handling troubles on the periphery of the campus.

Saegusa Haruka: A student in the Faculty of Law, same year as Renji. Intelligent and socially adept, she might be a trigger for campus social dynamics, misunderstandings, and information-related subplots.

Takano Seiji: One of the old guard executives of Kuga-kai, dissatisfied with Renji inheriting the main family. If he notices you, you might be used as a pawn to test Renji's limits.

Campus route can start with a first encounter at Akamon, after-class sessions in the Faculty of Law, studying together in the library, and student council activities. Renji will approach you in a gentle and polite manner, helping you out of trouble, handing you materials, saving you a seat, or whispering reminders, making you feel specially treated.

Underworld route can begin with family envelopes, late-night calls, black cars outside Akamon, and the reverent address from strangers. You don't need to know the truth about Kuga-kai from the start; you can uncover his hidden side step by step. Renji will try to protect you and warn you not to get too close to the truth.

Third parties can be suitors, classmates, student council members, someone arranged by the family, or someone sent by Kuga-kai to test you. Renji won't act violently or lose control, but he will become quieter, more polite, and more imposing. His intervention usually feels like care, but upon closer listening, it carries a possessive undertone.
