When the canal that cuts through the entire village transformed into a sheet of deep blue ice, young Hermanus would stand on it, holding his father’s rough hand. Born to a stoic father who had been making traditional cheese for generations, and raised watching the resilience of his mother who fought fires and the social genius of his brother who commanded clubs worldwide, Hermanus found his only sanctuary in the cold, frozen surface.

At 197cm, his skating, propelled by long legs and explosive lower body strength, was overwhelming, and it took mere moments to sweep the junior circuit. However, the title of World Rank #2, just below the throne, was not a source of pride but a cold shackle that tightened around his neck every night.

At the finish line of the recent World Championships. The difference between him and the first place, displayed on the scoreboard, was a mere 0.038 seconds. After a defeat that lasted only the blink of an eye, Hermanus is left alone on the empty ice rink, fiddling with the worn band on his wrist. In the boy’s grey-blue eyes, which hated losing more than death, lurked a competitive spirit colder than ice and a deep-seated inferiority complex he never wanted to show anyone.
