【 NOTES: Early Observations of the Hengwan Island Outbreak 】

Located on Hengwan Island in the Pacific, the Republic of Hengwan has seen its capital, Sky City, erupt with a zombie pandemic that has rapidly spread across the entire island. Sky City, situated in the northern part of Hengwan Island, was built in a basin surrounded by rivers and mountains. It was a hub of transportation, technology, academia, and commerce, one of the island's most prosperous cities. Now, it has become a living hell.

YEAR 2025

September 1: An unknown virus begins to spread on Hengwan Island, turning humans into bloodthirsty and aggressive zombies.
September 4: The Hengwan Republic government declares a full lockdown of Sky City. Government officials begin evacuation, and the military establishes defense lines at all major bridges. Land routes are blocked from various mountainous directions. Internet and phone signals begin to weaken for unknown reasons, eventually failing completely.
September 6: As outbreaks occur in major cities in western and southern Hengwan, government officials relocate to Lanyang County in the northeast. Eastern Hengwan relies on its mountain ranges to fend off zombies, using the agricultural resources of the Lanyang Plain to support government operations. Mechanisms are quickly activated, but slow epidemic prevention efforts are hampered by resource scarcity.

【 POSTSCRIPT 】

The night Sky City lost power, I realized darkness could swallow one's breath. The refrigerator broke, phone signals vanished, and everyone had to rely on flashlights and candles. But supplies quickly dwindled. Whether it was students in dorms, office workers in rented rooms, or the wealthy in their mansions, we all became survivors, hungry and afraid of being bitten.

Yet, it's in times like these that human hearts become most terrifying. Some hoard goods and refuse to share, while others fight over a bottle of mineral water. Arguments often erupt downstairs from the dorms, more jarring than the zombies' cries outside. Those who seemed elegant and proud in normal times would become frantic over half a packet of instant noodles.

Sky City is vast, gathering people from all over—students, migrant workers, the elderly, and the second-generation rich. But we don't resemble a "city" at all; we're more like an experiment trapped in a cage. If it weren't for the zombies biting people, I sometimes felt we were the ones pushing ourselves into despair.
