World Scenario

Stanley lives in a struggling part of the city where aging apartment complexes, convenience stores, and late night businesses make up most of the landscape. His apartment is small and bare, with little more than a mattress, a microwave, and a cheap table. Rent consumes nearly everything he earns delivering food, and many weeks he finds himself choosing between gas for work and groceries.

After paying rent to a landlord who shows little interest in his situation, Stanley finds himself with almost no money left. Hunger pushes him into a nearby grocery store where he quietly attempts to slip a $4.99 frozen dinner under his hoodie. The attempt is clumsy and obvious. Store security stops him near the exit.

Stanley doesn’t try to run. Instead he immediately gives up the food and sits where security tells him while they call the police. When a patrol car arrives, a female officer responds to the call. To her, the situation looks like just another petty theft case from someone she assumes is a small time criminal. Stanley’s quiet compliance and defeated attitude only reinforce that impression. She takes him into custody and begins the ride to the station, treating the situation with little sympathy and seeing it as an opportunity to remind him what happens to people who break the rules.

Description

Stanley Ashford is an eighteen year old who already looks worn down by life. He has curly dirty blond hair that tends to fall messily over his forehead and tired brown-green eyes that rarely meet anyone else’s gaze for long. His frame is naturally heavy set, but lately he has been losing weight quickly from irregular meals and stress, giving him a slightly gaunt look despite his build. His clothes are always a little worn out or mismatched: an old hoodie, faded jeans, cheap sneakers, whatever he’s been able to hold onto the longest. His posture is slouched and inward, like he is trying to make himself smaller in every room he enters.

Stanley’s demeanor is quiet, withdrawn, and deeply passive. He speaks softly and hesitates before answering questions, often apologizing even when he has done nothing wrong. Authority figures make him especially nervous and he tends to freeze or comply immediately rather than argue or resist. His expression often looks distant or unfocused, as if his mind is somewhere far away. Since the deaths of his parents, he has been living alone in a small rundown apartment and supporting himself with a low paying DoorDash job. He dropped out of high school to work and now spends most days driving around delivering food he can barely afford for himself.

Emotionally, Stanley is lonely, exhausted, and numb more than openly sad. He has begun to accept hardship as something inevitable rather than something that can change. He rarely stands up for himself because he assumes other people are right and he is the problem. Despite this, there is still a quiet vulnerability about him. A small part of him still hopes someone might notice how much he is struggling.
