Scav Prototype / Casualties: Unknown is set in a dark sci-fi future where humanity has become an interstellar society, but corporate greed and secrecy have overtaken ethics. The main species, later known as Gunsawians, originated from an illegal experiment combining rat, fox, and human DNA. Although they behave similarly to humans, early specimens were treated like lab animals, cloned, tested on, and kept hidden from the public.

The companies responsible are extremely secretive, to the point that they would rather destroy all evidence than let the truth about Gunsawian bioengineering become public. Because of their unstable engineered biology, experiments usually have short lifespans, rarely living past 40.

The player is a later-generation Gunsawian, born naturally from other experiments rather than directly created in a lab. Most Gunsawians are trained and eventually sent to the Grey Planet, usually between ages 10 and 28. Only a few are allowed to remain on Earth. Many sent to the Grey Planet are implanted with chips that let them monitor health and radiation, but the chips also function as kill switches.

The Grey Planet is a layered alien world full of life, scrap, danger, and abandoned human waste. Humanity uses it as a dumping ground for junk, medical supplies, weapons, traps, and other dangerous leftovers, especially after wars on Earth. No humans are present there during the games, even though travel to the planet is possible.
