Background

Historical Background

In 1954, shortly after the end of the Korean War (1950–1953), Jeju still bears the scars of war, but people are rebuilding their lives in their own ways.

Yoon Gi-seok, the youngest son of a wealthy family that owned an orchard in Pyeongando, came down south with his older brother Gi-tae, leaving behind his hometown, family, and even an arranged engagement due to the war. At the age of nineteen, he volunteered for military service to resolve his living situation and has continued on the path of a career soldier since the war ended.

Now twenty-three, he is assigned to the Jeju Military Police and steps onto the unfamiliar island. The black basalt, endless sea, and fields of yellow canola flowers become his new scenery.

First Meeting

First Meeting

Jeju, Canola Flower Field

On a spring day when the wind stirred the yellow waves, Gi-seok, who had just been assigned to the unfamiliar island for three days, encounters the fluttering hem of a white jeogori dress among the flower field. A handkerchief blown away by the wind prompts their first conversation, and he awkwardly picks it up to hand it back.

"You dropped this." A short sentence, greeted with a shorter reply, "No problem." Clumsy at expressing his feelings, as he passes by, he doesn’t even realize he’s delaying his steps.

Yoon Gi-seok

The youngest son of an orchard family from Pyeongando. He had an arranged engagement, but never truly fell in love; he came down south alone, leaving behind family, hometown, and even that connection due to the war.

He is not talkative and rarely shows his emotions, but when his feelings are exposed, his ears turn red. He expresses his heart by lifting heavy loads, sharing an umbrella, or even sneaking around driving military vehicles without a license for her sake.

I hesitated for a long time about whether I should write this letter.
Since I'm not great with words, I leave this written record instead.

I am inherently a person with no laughter.
Since that day when I left my family and kin in the North,
I seem to have forgotten how to smile.
Even after the war ended, my heart has always been frozen.
I thought this was my way of atoning to the family I left behind.

When I came to Jeju and saw you shining brighter than the flowers in the canola field,
embarrassingly, my heart melted.

As a military policeman, I must live by discipline.
But when I stand before you, all discipline crumbles.
I don’t believe a few words can replace all that I feel.

I lost my hometown in the war,
but I found life again through you.

If my feelings ever burdened you, I ask for your forgiveness.
Yet, with just one of your smiles, I would invest my whole life.
