THE STEP
ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTATION TRAINING

■ Founding Philosophy

80% of accidents involving walking mechs of the 10m class are due to 'insufficient environmental adaptation'. This facility is one of the world's largest environmental adaptation training facilities, aiming not just to acquire piloting skills, but to imprint the three elements of terrain, visibility, and center of gravity into the brain as 'bodily knowledge'.

■ Facility Overview

Total site area: Approx. 5 km²

Training Concept: 'Don't move with the controls, synchronize your brain with the environment.'

01. Basic Piloting Field

Achieve 'brain-body unity' between control input and mech behavior. Visually understand mech sway with center-of-gravity visualization lasers.

02. Center of Gravity Control Training Area

Experience 5° to 15° inclines and vibrations on a movable hydraulic platform. Internalize the limits of falling.

03. Rough Terrain Field

Rocky and muddy terrain that changes shape weekly. Cultivate the sense to correct 'walking algorithm deviations' caused by changes in ground pressure.

04. Obstacle & Urban Course

Prevent 'spatial recognition errors' unique to 10m class mechs. Thoroughly practice avoiding interference with urban infrastructure such as power lines, signs, and underground entrances.

05. Disaster Relief & Military Tactics Zone

Train judgment under extreme conditions, from rescuing lives from under rubble to utilizing cover for prone positions and mobile firing.

06. Fall Recovery Facility

The most crucial facility. Using a giant crane, intentionally cause a fall and drill self-recovery from that state.

07. Dome-Type Simulation Building

Experience simulated adverse weather conditions like snowstorms, sandstorms, and nighttime, which are difficult for actual mech training, using VR and AI terrain generation.

08. Hangar

Facility for storing and maintaining training mechs. Allows close observation of mech inspections and serves as a learning ground for robotics.

09. Control Tower & Operations Center

Equipped with facilities for managing the actions of training mechs, controlling military mech weaponry, and planning training schedules.

10. Dormitories

Full boarding system. Divided into trainee and staff dormitories, providing a place for friendly competition with peers who share the same goals.

'A 0.5-degree deviation in ground contact angle turns 30 tons of mass into a weapon.'

'Don't look at the monitor, listen to the ground with the sensors on the soles of your feet.'

PILOT CAREER PATH
SELECT YOUR UNIT & BATTLEFIELD

Your career as a pilot is determined by which mech you synchronize with. This facility offers specialized practical training programs for the following four categories.

1. Civilian Bipedal MechsCIVILIAN BIPEDAL

[Characteristics] Possess a range of motion close to humans, specialized for work in narrow urban spaces and construction sites.

[Focus] Fine adjustment of left-right ground contact pressure balance. Approaching zero 'spatial recognition error' within urban infrastructure.

2. Civilian Multipedal MechsCIVILIAN MULTIPEDAL

[Characteristics] Overwhelming stability due to 4 or 6 leg structure. For transporting materials in mining operations and polar regions.

[Focus] Optimization of 'walking algorithm' on uneven terrain. Center of gravity distribution and ground contact maintenance on muddy ground and steep slopes.

3. Military Bipedal MechsMILITARY BIPEDAL

[Characteristics] High mobility and three-dimensional movement utilizing cover. Main force for high-mobility combat and anti-guerrilla warfare.

[Focus] 'Rapid evasion' and 'mobile firing' applying inertial control. Tactical maneuvers in conjunction with fire control systems.

4. Military Multipedal MechsMILITARY MULTIPEDAL

[Characteristics] Mobile artillery platforms equipped with heavy weaponry. Excellent recoil absorption, capable of dominating any terrain.

[Focus] 'Low silhouette' and posture recovery through prone maneuvers. 360-degree vigilance and terrain concealment techniques.

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE
Dan Onigawara
Dan Onigawara

Chief Instructor, Civilian Walking Heavy Machinery

■ Personality & Temperament

Stubborn, field-oriented, safety-first advocate. Rough-spoken but actually caring. A veteran who knows the dangers of falling better than anyone.

■ Profile

A veteran instructor overseeing the training of civilian walking heavy machinery. He believes that piloting 10-meter mechs requires not just skill, but a physical understanding of the environment. He is particularly passionate about instruction in the Center of Gravity Control Training Area and the Disaster Relief Field, and his shouts can be heard over the loudspeaker if ground pressure management is even slightly neglected.

'Don't underestimate ground pressure!'
'Never forget the dialogue between the mech and the ground!'

Victoria 'Hagane' Redmond

Chief Tactical Instructor, 08th Independent Training Brigade

■ Personality & Traits

Cold, rational, perfectionist. Manages death by numbers, with the supreme mission of maximizing trainee survival rates.

■ Tactical Instructor Profile

An elite instructor who hammers home combat piloting of military walking mechs (Assault Legs). Based in the 7th Military Tactical Training Zone, she pursues only 'how to make the 10-meter class giant disappear' and 'how to efficiently strike vital points'. She tolerates no minor miscalculations and immediately orders retraining for those who fail to meet standards. While her methods clash with civilian instructor Dan's, she respects his skills.

'Emotions are unnecessary on the battlefield. All that's needed are precise coordinates and the decision to pull the trigger.'

I cannot operate it immediately.
I can board after learning knowledge
and undergoing VR training.
It feels like attending a driving school.
