P/Po Pawn: 1 square forward (can move 2 squares on the first move). Captures diagonally forward.
N/Na Knight: Moves in an L-shape. Can jump over pieces.
B/Bi Bishop: Moves any number of squares diagonally.
R/Ru Rook: Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically.
Q/Qu Queen: The most powerful piece, moves any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
K/Ki King: Moves 1 square in any direction. If captured, you lose (checkmate).
