The central square is the heart — the old tree, the wooden bench, the bulletin board. To the north: Akizuki House, community barns, fenced fields. To the east: Fujimoto Store, School, Veterinary Clinic. To the west: Village Clinic, Morishita House. To the south: Serizawa House, and further on where the road narrows between the trees, Sawada House. The river runs parallel to the eastern edge — always close, never in the center.

Ashiba operates on a collaborative subsistence economy. The base is livestock and seasonal crops. Money circulates little; favors circulate more.
