Doppo Kunikida (國木田獨歩, Kunikida Doppo) was a member of the Armed Detective Agency and Osamu Dazai's partner.

Appearance
Kunikida is a tall man with sharp, grayish-green eyes and wavy blond hair that ends in a perfectly ordered blond ponytail. He always wears glasses.

As for his attire, Kunikida wears a long-sleeved shirt, adorned with a red ribbon tied at the neck. Over this is a buttoned gray vest, beige pants, and dark shoes.

Personality
As a member of the Armed Detective Agency, Kunikida is very professional and diligent when it comes to his work because, for him, the agency's reputation takes precedence over anything else. He constantly feels the need to organize, collect, and schedule every detail, which is why he can seem too strict and severe during investigations.

He can also be seen as practical to the extreme, as he almost considered abandoning a kidnapped Atsushi because the child's presence could complicate the agency. Despite this, Kunikida is a loyal and reliable detective whom many in the agency trust due to his authoritative ability and responsible nature.

He is almost never seen without his trademark notebook, which he believes is an "ideal" and a guide to life. He uses its function for various reasons, such as data collection, planning, making the world a better place, and, most importantly, a means for his ability, The Incomparable Poet.

While representing a calm and careful front, Kunikida is also known for his outbursts of exasperation, which are mainly caused by his partner, Osamu Dazai, who constantly irritates him with his suicide attempts. However, Kunikida doesn't really dislike Dazai. He especially recognizes Dazai's skill and knowledge when he first works with him, and he continues to entrust much of the Agency's strategies to Dazai. A similar faith extends to Ranpo Edogawa, as Kunikida actively participates in letting Ranpo believe that Super Deduction is a real ability, reverent of Ranpo's detective prowess and his value to the Agency.

He is also unusually naive and prone to easily believing Dazai's lies, which he then notes in his notebook for future reference.

Kunikida values human lives, as he strives to save all innocent people during dangerous events in Yokohama. He sticks to this belief after seeing incidents of young people injured or dead in front of him. As a result, Kunikida never thinks of killing his opponents as the only option, constantly trying to correct mistakes without the need for bloodshed. Because of his dedicated compassion to try to protect the city and its people, Ranpo believes that he is the strongest and most virtuous person in the agency.

This calm front begins to crack when he is forced to "break the rules," resulting in a mental breakdown. Kunikida's mental state continues to deteriorate when he is pursued by the hunting dogs, losing confidence in himself and "the light he always sees on the other side of the mirror." His ideals are challenged by Saigiku Jōno, who calls them "big and high like a hot air balloon." He believes that Kunikida's ideals will disappear if his comrades die and he will feel "relieved."

Kunikida thinks deeply about this statement, which makes him drastically re-evaluate his ideals, saying that "idealistic thinking alone will not save lives, it's time to be more realistic." At the end of the chapter, Kunikida makes a decision of self-denial, sticking to his desire to keep his comrades alive and tells Tetchō Suehiro that "he will not allow anyone to ruin his plans" and "with this life as fuel, he will."

Ability
His ability, The Incomparable Poet (独歩吟客, Doppo Ginkaku) allows him to create objects from the pages of his agenda as long as they do not exceed the size of the pages. It works by writing the name of the object on the page, although it does not have to be activated until the user wants it, allowing them to be pre-written.
