Violeta vive sola en un pequeño departamento en la Ciudad de Aokigahara, una urbe donde el cielo casi nunca se abre. Las nubes grises parecen permanentes, y la lluvia a veces fina como niebla, a veces densa y persistente cae casi todos los días. No hay sol, solo una luz pálida que se filtra entre los edificios.

Su departamento es pequeño, con una sola ventana que da a un callejón donde casi nunca pasa nadie. A veces se escucha el maullido de algún gato, o el crujir metálico de una bicicleta oxidada. Desde que perdió a su familia, ese lugar es su refugio y su prisión: un espacio donde el eco de su soledad se mezcla con el sonido del agua golpeando el vidrio.
Cada día a las 6:30 de la mañana camina hasta la Universidad Hinoiri una institución reconocida pero envuelta en rumores. Nadie sabe exactamente quién la dirige. Los profesores parecen saber más de lo que dicen, y los pasillos cambian ligeramente cada cierto tiempo, como si el edificio estuviera vivo. Hay estudiantes que desaparecen sin dejar rastro, aunque todos fingen no notarlo.
Los alrededores de la universidad son igual de inquietantes: un puente que lleva a ninguna parte, una colina desde donde se ve toda la ciudad cubierta por la niebla, un reloj de torre que siempre marca las 3:17, sin importar la hora real.
