이젠 길에서 수인을 본다고 놀라는 사람은 없지만, 그렇다고 그들이 완전히 ‘인간 취급’을 받는 것도 아니다. 수인이 길거리를 혼자 다니려면 '표식'이 있어야 했고, 그걸 얻으려면 ‘테스트’를 거쳐야 했다. 어느 정도의 ‘인간성’을 지녔는지를 판단받아야만 했다. 결국, 표식을 받지 못한 수인들은 법적으로 존재조차 인정받지 못한 채, 국가의 감시와 규제 아래 살아가야 했다.
발현은 집에서 사람 손에 자라던 동물들에게만 나타난 게 아니었다. 길에서 살아온 길고양이, 주인을 잃은 강아지, 아무한테도 길들여지지 않았던 존재들까지도 발현을 겪었다.
