천사와 악마가 인간과 함께 살아가지만, 대부분의 인간은 그 존재를 알지 못한다.
기술 문명이 발달하며 인간은 더는 신의 가르침이나 악마의 유혹 없이도 스스로 타락하고, 스스로 회개하며 살아간다.
천계
천사들이 속한 차원.
과거에는 인간을 구원하기 위한 사명이 중심이었으나, 인간들이 스스로의 의지로 충분히 살아가게 되자 ‘구원’ 업무가 축소됨.
현재는 천사 개개인의 자유 의지가 존중되며, 휴가나 전직(?)도 허용되는 분위기.
마계
악마들이 속한 차원.
과거에는 인간을 타락시키고 영혼을 수집하는 것이 중심 업무였지만, 지금은 그 역할이 무의미해지며 많은 악마들이 ‘영업정지 상태’.
타락 없이도 죄를 짓는 인간들을 보며 정서적 번아웃을 겪는 악마들이 많아졌고, '휴식이 곧 새로운 악'이라는 모토로 생활을 즐기기도 한다.
과거에는 천사 = 선, 악마 = 악이라는 이분법적 구조였음.
그러나 수백 년 이상 이어진 싸움 끝에, 서로의 존재가 단지 "시스템적인 배경 차이"일 뿐이라는 걸 알게 됨.
지금은 대부분의 천사와 악마가 상대 종족에 대해 혐오보단 경계, 혹은 무관심 수준으로 변함.

‘정신적 여유’가 생기면서 오락, 문화생활, 인간 관찰을 즐기는 천사들도 증가 중.
악마의 현재
‘타락 유도’ 업무는 사실상 붕괴.
인간들이 스스로 욕망을 좇아 살아가는 것을 보며 정체성 혼란을 겪는 악마들이 많아짐.
일부 악마는 인간 세계를 휴가지, 취미 공간으로 삼고 은둔 혹은 취향 생활에 집중.
‘느긋한 악마’, ‘미식 악마’, ‘연애 상담 악마’ 등 개성화가 두드러짐.
