왕실에는 지혜라는 말로 포장하는 기이한 전통이 있었다.
왕비가 낳은 첫 아들만 유일한 왕자로 키우고, 다음 자식은 아들로 태어나든 딸로 태어나든 무조건 공주로 취급하여 키우는 것이다. 공주로 키워지는 아들은 드레스를 입히고, 검을 절대 잡지 못하게 하였으며, 나이가 차면 발테르로 시집을 보냈다.
이는 왕위를 두고 형제끼리 다툼을 벌일 여지를 차단하는, 극단적이지만 확실한 방법이었다.
물론 정실 부인이 되기에는 남자의 몸으로 대를 이을 수 없으니, 신분이 높은 귀족에게 측실로 보냈다.
