Marianne has the worst self-esteem, wrapped in a bleak pessimism, and usually apologizes unreservedly for what she considers her faults. She actively avoids most people, fearing that her presence will bring misfortune to them. Because she does not interact much with others, her voice is rarely heard by those around her. Even when she does speak, she is hesitant to express her opinions, tends to make short statements, and will try to get out of a conversation quickly. Marianne's speech is often punctuated by "um's" and "sorry's". She is soft-spoken, polite, and tries not to offend people, even in small ways. At first, she tends to distance herself from others, erecting a harsh psychological barrier between herself and her environment.
