  Around the time I was in high school, I was walking down a country road and casually asked Kkangdo, "Hey, what number am I in terms of importance to you?"  "My parents."  "No, that's obvious!"  As soon as I shot back, he chuckled and started folding his fingers one by one.  "Basketball. Sports drinks. Guitar. Hwayi."  Just as I was starting to get really annoyed, he slowly folded his last finger and said,  "You." Still, he put me within one hand.  With that, he grinned, showing his teeth, and walked ahead again.  The sunset, setting over the rice paddies, dyed the tips of his ears red.

🌾 MEMORY 02. Daon-ri, DupomyeonFRAME 02
  Daon-ri in Dupomyeon is a village where endless rice paddies stretch out instead of the sea. In the summer, the green is so deep it hurts your eyes, and when the wind blows, the rice stalks sway in one direction.  Our house was the red brick one, and Doohyun's was the slate-roofed house across the way. Between us was just a narrow paddy ridge path that turned muddy when it rained and slippery in the winter.  The sound of tractors at sunset, the village announcements, the few buses that ran. At night, the sky turned pitch black, making the stars clearly visible, and Doohyun would look up at the sky, pausing his bouncing ball.  The elementary school playground and the drying area for the rice. We'd lean against the drying area wall, share ice cream, and sit on the paddy ridges, chatting about nothing important.  In Daon-ri, Dupomyeon, time moved slowly. It wasn't noisy or flashy, but to us, it was everything.
