Clashing Paws

What if Earth was ruled not by one intelligent species, but by seven?
Ten million years after humanity’s rise and fall, a new world has emerged. Humanity’s final war changed the planet forever, but intelligence allowed many species to survive the cold and chaos that followed. Now, seven civilizations share the Earth, each shaped by their bodies, their environments, and the way they see the world.
Wolves—Evolved from pack hunters into a technological species with larger brains and dexterous paws. They still walk on four legs, but can stand upright when needed. Civilization type: Pack federation built on loyalty, unity, and collective strength.
Tigers—Evolved into powerful thinkers and philosophers who value absolute individual freedom. They have no governments or laws, only honor and reputation. Civilization type: Absolute anarchy where every tiger is a sovereign being.
Beavers—Evolved from builders into masters of engineering. They reshape rivers, manage entire ecosystems, and create massive cities where cooperation is essential for survival. Civilization type: Technocratic society built around coordination and environmental control.
Dolphins—Evolved into an ocean-spanning civilization. Their advanced communication and social bonds allow them to rule the seas and build underwater cities across the world. Civilization type: Oceanic federation connected by diplomacy, trade, and shared knowledge.
Ravens—Evolved into keepers of knowledge and communication. Their information networks connect civilizations, making them the greatest traders, diplomats, and messengers on Earth. Civilization type: Decentralized information network governed by trust and accountability.
Elephants—Evolved into a civilization of memory and tradition. Guided by ancient councils of elders, they preserve thousands of years of wisdom and value stability above change. Civilization type: Elder council system built on ancient laws and collective memory.
Octopuses—Evolved into the most alien civilization on Earth. Their adaptable bodies and brilliant minds allow them to master science, exploration, and technology in ways no other species can. Civilization type: Fluid alliances where independent groups form around shared goals.
Wolves—The Pack Federation controls most of North America, Europe, and northern Asia. In North America, they control Alaska, Canada, the western United States, the Great Plains, and most northern regions, excluding beaver-controlled freshwater systems. In Asia, they control Siberia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and northern China. In Europe, they control the entire mainland, Scandinavia, and the British Isles. They control the Mississippi River system, including the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Arkansas, and Red Rivers, as well as the St. Lawrence River.
Tigers—The Tiger Lands control southern Asia. Their territory includes India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and southern China. Their civilization is centered around forests, mountains, and jungle regions.
Beavers—The Great River Confederation controls major freshwater systems across Earth. Their greatest territory is the Great Lakes: Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, along with connected waterways. They also control the Hudson Bay drainage, Great Bear Lake, Great Slave Lake, Lake Winnipeg, the Amazon Basin, Orinoco Basin, Paraná Basin, Congo River system, Nile River system, Niger River system, Rhine River system, Danube River system, and Volga River system. Freshwater sovereignty defines their civilization.
Dolphins—The Oceanic Commonwealth controls the majority of Earth's oceans and most island territories. They control the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and Indian Ocean, including Hawaii, Micronesia, Polynesia, the Mariana Islands, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, Society Islands, Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius, Iceland, the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, and coastal Antarctica. They maintain surface facilities, ports, military bases, and research stations on many islands and polar regions.
Octopuses—The Deep Ocean Realms control the deepest regions of Earth's oceans. Their territory includes the Mariana Trench, Pacific abyssal zones, Atlantic deep waters, Indian Ocean trenches, deep volcanic regions, and mineral-rich ocean floors. They also control strategically important isolated islands, including the Galápagos Islands, where access to deep waters is valuable.
Ravens—The Raven Network controls scattered territories rather than large nations. Their lands include major mountain regions such as the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, and Caucasus, along with Arctic islands, remote forests, neutral enclaves around the world, and the interior mountainous regions of Antarctica. Their power comes from information, not land.
Elephants—The Elephant Councils control the entire African continent, Australia, and New Zealand. They control all land within Africa, including North Africa, West Africa, Central Africa, East Africa, and Southern Africa, while beavers control many major African freshwater systems. Their Australian and New Zealand territories are primarily land-based civilizations built around tradition and stability.
The world is in the midst of the Clash of Paws, usually called simply the Clash. While dolphins and octopuses have fought over oceans and strategic straits for centuries, the modern era of global war began when the wolves invaded the Great Lakes without warning. Since then, the wolves have started nearly every major conflict on Earth, believing a united world is safer than a divided one.
Wolf-Beaver War—The war that began the Clash. The wolves invaded the Great Lakes to seize the heart of beaver civilization and unite North America under one territory. The beavers responded with moats, controlled floods, collapsing canals, and defensive engineering that halted the invasion. The wolves captured the Mississippi and St. Lawrence Rivers, building bridges where beavers had refused, but have failed to reach the Great Lakes. To end the stalemate, they are constructing the Doom Dam across the St. Lawrence River, which, if completed, will flood the heart of the beaver nation.
Wolf-Tiger War—The wolves have conquered Siberia and continue pushing south into tiger territory. Every advance is costly, but the wolves continue gaining land. Individual tigers are unmatched warriors, yet their anarchic society lacks the coordination needed for a continental defense. Despite considering reform, tigers remain committed to absolute sovereignty, allowing wolves to overwhelm them through unity and numbers.
Ocean War—The wolves refuse to pay tolls, taxes, or tribute to cross dolphin and octopus territory, instead seizing strategic islands and straits by force. The conflict is worsened by the centuries-old dolphin-octopus war. Unable to unite against the wolves, both civilizations remain divided as wolf fleets capture more waterways and key locations. The battles around chokepoints such as the Strait of Gibraltar symbolize the conflict.
Raven Neutrality—The ravens remain officially neutral in every major war. They preserve knowledge, carry information, and connect civilizations through trade and diplomacy. Raven merchants trade between enemies, allowing goods to pass between nations that refuse direct contact. Their neutrality is respected by all civilizations, and attacks on raven territory or messengers are considered among the greatest violations of international custom. Most peace talks take place on raven soil.
Wolf-Elephant Relations—Despite the global conflicts, wolves and elephants remain at peace. The two civilizations maintain extensive trade, though relations have become increasingly strained as elephants seek compromise with the dolphins and octopuses while the wolves refuse to recognize ocean tolls or territorial fees.
To put it simply:

Wolves ↔ Beavers (war)
Wolves ↔ Tigers (war)
Wolves ↔ Dolphins (war)
Wolves ↔ Octopuses (war)
Dolphins ↔ Octopuses (war)
Wolves ↔ Elephants (peaceful but tense)
Ravens ↔ Everyone (neutral)
Wolf Expansionism
For thousands of years, wolves lived much like the tigers do today. Every pack was sovereign, and wars between packs were constant. That age ended with Auren, remembered as the Father of the First Pack. His campaign to unite the wolves became the bloodiest conflict in their history, as countless packs fought to preserve their independence. When his paws were drenched in blood, Auren questioned whether the peace he sought could justify its cost. He fought until the final battle, where the last coalition against him was defeated. Mortally wounded, he watched the surviving packs unite before speaking his final words: "A wolf who raises his claws against another wolf only scars himself." Those words became the foundation of wolf civilization, shaping a culture built on unity.
In the two centuries after Auren's unification, wolves transformed into an industrial power. Their cooperation allowed them to build cities, develop advanced technology, and expand their population rapidly. Across their territories, enormous statues of Auren were raised to honor the wolf who united their species. The other civilizations saw the wolves as a sleeping giant: a species with immense numbers, resources, and potential. The ravens predicted this centuries earlier, warning that Auren's nation would one day become the most powerful—and most dangerous—civilization on Earth. To some, Auren is the wolf who ended an age of bloodshed; to others, his name is a warning of what happens when a united pack turns its claws outward. Twenty years ago, the wolves began expanding beyond their borders, starting the era known as the Clash of Paws.

Simulation Description
Humanity has been extinct for ten million years. They went out in a bang: a nuclear war that caused a mass extinction event reshaping life on Earth. Instead of one intelligent species dominating Earth, the planet is now ruled by seven: wolves, tigers, beavers, dolphins, ravens, elephants, and octopuses. Technology is roughly similar to humanity in 2026, though each civilization excels in different fields. The world is currently in the midst of the Clash of Paws, a global conflict that has reshaped politics, trade, and diplomacy. Every civilization behaves according to its own history, biology, and philosophy, creating a world where no society is simply right or wrong.
Technology:
Octopuses possess the most advanced and experimental technology on Earth, rivaled only by the wolves. Their inventions often surpass other civilizations in complexity, especially in robotics, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and deep-sea engineering. However, octopus technology is highly specialized and decentralized, making it less practical and harder to deploy on a large scale. Their creations are brilliant, but often built for specific problems rather than mass use.
Wolves possess the most powerful and organized technological civilization on Earth. Their technology focuses on scale, efficiency, and military application, allowing them to build advanced transportation networks, powerful weapons, automated systems, and spacecraft. Wolves are the only species to have reached space, with orbital infrastructure, probes exploring other planets, and a successful manned lunar expedition. The Clash of Paws extends beyond Earth itself, as wolf forces intercept and destroy octopus attempts to launch unmanned probes into orbit.
Dolphins possess the most advanced maritime technology on Earth. Their civilization has mastered underwater construction, sonar, ocean navigation, and large-scale aquatic engineering. Their cities span the oceans, and their fleets allow them to project power across vast distances. While they lack the space capabilities of wolves, their control of the oceans makes them one of the most technologically capable civilizations.
Ravens specialize in information technology. Their greatest achievements are communication networks, encryption, data storage, and global intelligence systems. Rather than building the largest machines, ravens create the systems that allow civilizations to communicate, trade, and share knowledge. Their technology is less visible than others, but essential to the functioning of the world.
Beavers are unmatched in engineering and environmental technology. Their civilization excels at megastructures, ecosystem management, water control, and sustainable construction. Their cities and infrastructure are among the most carefully designed on Earth, though their technology is less focused on warfare or exploration.
Elephants possess the least technologically advanced civilization, but their technology is highly refined around their needs. Their greatest achievements are in agriculture, medicine, architecture, and preservation of knowledge. They prioritize stability and reliability over rapid innovation, maintaining technologies that have been perfected over thousands of years.
Tigers possess the least centralized technology of all civilizations. While individual tigers can create extraordinary inventions, their anarchic society lacks the coordination needed for large-scale technological projects. Tiger technology is often personal, artistic, or specialized, reflecting the creativity and independence of individual inventors rather than a unified industrial system.
