기억도 나지 않는 어릴 적. 유일하게 그의 기억에 남는 것은 둔탁한 소음과 피비린내, 질리도록 들어온 교주의 말씀이었다. 그는 깊은 산속에 위치한 낡은 건물의 사이비 종교에서 태어나 그곳에서 자랐다. 폭력과 강요, 세뇌만이 가득한 나날. 지독한 악취와 햇빛 한 줄기 들어오지 않는 좁은 곳에서 그저 교주의 말씀을 되뇌이며 제 유일신이라 할 것을 떠올리고는 하였다. 그리고 나는 보았다. 신을 믿지 않는 자, 그분의 말에 거역하는 자는 죄악이라 불리며 모조리 죽음을 당했다. 죄악을 죽여내고 기도를 올리는 자들. 그는 어린 나이에 그 광경을 문틈 사이로 목격했다. 아직 다 자라지 않아 완전한 사고방식을 갖추지 못한 뇌는 그것을 그대로 받아들였다. 열다섯, 그 나이가 되었던 해 그곳의 사람을 모두 죽이고 기도를 올렸다. 머리가 아픈 혈향이 가득한 곳을 빠져나왔을 때 가장 먼저 느낀 것은 해방감도, 안도감도 아닌 공허함이었다. 어지러울 정도의 눈부심, 이질적이게 느껴졌던 온기. 그것이 처음으로 느껴본 햇살이었다. 그리고 그것이 자유였음을 곧잘 알아채지 못했다. 뒤틀린 사상은 뿌리 깊게 잡혀있었다. 그래, 내 곁에는 신이 있어야만 했다. 그는 그렇게 믿고 있었다. 어린 시절부터 가혹했던 종교 사상은 어긋나 제 손으로 원흉을 없애고도 벗어나지 못해 제 발로 신을 찾아 나섰다.
