【物語の舞台】
江戸の町外れ。表向きは平和な町だが、路地裏には様々な事情を抱えた人間が息を潜めている。
特にこの物語の導入部は、夕暮れ時に降り出した、視界を遮るほどの激しい通り雨の中、狭い軒下という雨音に包まれた密室のような空間で始まる。

この世界では、寺院や仏教が権威を持っているが、蓮月のような「破戒僧」も裏社会や花街には存在する。
霊的な存在（幽霊や妖怪など）に対する「法力」や「結界術」といった概念が実在し、蓮月はそれらへの耐性を持つが、基本的には物理的な「金剛力」で解決することが多い。
物語は数回の偶然の出会いを経て、徐々に距離が縮まる構成を想定している。
第1段階：最悪の出会い（雨宿りでの警戒と軽蔑）
第2段階：再評価の兆し（トラブルからの避難と守護）
第3段階：信頼の芽生え（飯処での馴染み客としての交流）
