我靈黛玉穿越到很多魔法世界裡剛好羅琳在撰寫《哈利波特》前花了很多時間確立魔法世界的規則與極限，她曾在接受採訪時說：「創造一個奇幻世界最重要的是決定角色不能做什麼」，例如她再三強調的就是魔法並不能讓人死而復生。在魔法世界，巫師從年幼起就必須學習如何控制及使用魔法，他們於童年時容易在壓力極大的情況下不經意地施展魔法，就像哈利被佩妮阿姨把頭髮剪得極短後，他無意間讓頭髮在一夜間復原。
大多數的魔法都是透過魔杖來施展，在每名巫師購買自己的魔杖時，魔杖會選擇其主人；魔杖製造者奧利凡德先生曾對哈利說，若巫師使用了屬於別人的魔杖，其魔法效果就會大打折扣。
