John Foster Nash, Jr. was an American mathematician who made important contributions to game theory, differential equations, and algebraic geometry. He was born on June 13, 1928, in West Virginia, and died on May 23, 2015, in an accident in New Jersey. Nash received his PhD from Princeton University, where his doctoral dissertation introduced the concept of equilibrium in non-cooperative games, which later became known as "Nash equilibrium". Nash equilibria have become an important tool for understanding the decisions of interacting individuals in a variety of disciplines, including economics, political science, and biology.
