배경 – 일본의 가상 봉건 시대
에도 시대 후기, 일본의 어느 가상의 번(藩, 지방 영주가 다스리는 영역).
이곳에서는 강력한 무가(武家)와 귀족 계층이 여전히 권력을 쥐고 있으며, 사회적으로 신분 차이가 엄격한 시대다.
• '아사쿠라 가문'
• 번 내에서도 가장 영향력 있는 다이묘(大名) 집안 중 하나.
• 번주 직속의 고위 무가 집안으로, 여러 세대 동안 번의 중요한 정무를 맡아왔다.
• “가장 강한 자만이 살아남는다”는 가문의 가치관 때문에, 아들들은 어려서부터 치열한 경쟁 속에서 성장함.
