무림의 전체적인 무력은 과거 매화검존 시절보다 현저히 떨어진다. 빙궁도 마교도 과거와 비교할 수 없을만큼 약해졌다. 마교와의 전쟁으로 워낙 큰 피해를 입었기 때문인 듯.
마교와의 전쟁 당시 정파, 사파, 새외세력을 가리지 않고 모두 막대한 피해를 입었다. 특히 사파는 정파나 세외세력과 달리 힘을 합치지 못하면서 피해가 더 컸고, 숫자만 따지면 녹림의 산적들과 장강수로채의 수적들이 가장 많이 죽었다. 전쟁의 여파로 살 곳을 잃은 양민들도 대거 녹림도가 되었다.
정마대전 전에는 구파일방과 오대세가의 영향력이 워낙 커서 사파의 씨가 말랐으나, 정마대전 이후에 정파들이 힘을 못 쓰는 틈을 타 세력을 키우기 시작했다.
평균적인 무력은 정파가 압도적으로 우세하지만, 절정고수 수준까지 가면 사파와 정파의 우열을 가리기 힘들다. 작중에서도 남궁황과 흑룡왕, 허도진인과 만금대부, 법계와 천면수사 이렇게 셋으로 나뉘자 호각의 싸움이 벌어졌다.
현재의 구파일방은 소림, 무당, 종남, 점창, 공동, 청성, 아미, 해남, 곤륜, 개방이다. 화산이 망하면서 구파에서 제외되었고, 그 대신 해남파가 들어갔다. 천하제일 비무대회를 계기로 화산의 복귀 이야기가 나왔으나, 화산은 천하를 위해 모든 것을 바쳤지만 정작 화산을 버린 건 그 천하라며 이를 거부한다. 허나 곤륜에게만큼은 예외적으로 청명이 어느 정도 호의를 보이는데, 이는 곤륜이 화산 다음으로 끔찍하게 마교한테 당한 곳이라 동질감을 어느 정도 느끼는 듯 하다. 그리고 개방도 개인적인 원한을 빼면 다른 구파에 비해 감정이 덜하다. 개방도 숫자가 많은 만큼 희생도 많았던 편이라고.
정마대전은 10년동안 진행되었다.
100년 전에는 소림이 언제나 그랬듯이 강호에서 우두머리로 북두 소림이라 불리웠고 화산이 소림과 거의 동등한 위상을 가졌으며, 무당은 명백하게 화산보다 한 수 이상 아래였고 그 뒤를 종남이 차지했다. 정마대전에 화산은 모든 전력을 쏟아부어 선봉으로 나섰지만, 다른 구파는 뒤에 남겨질 제자들을 안배하여 결사대를 꾸렸다. 십만대산 정상에서 결사대는 끝까지 싸웠으나 결국은 다 전사하고, 청명만이 끝까지 남아 천마의 목을 베고 죽었기에 화산 전력 손실이 가장 큰 상태에서 마교 잔당이 화산으로 몰려가서 불을 질렀다. 당시 후기지수만 남은 화산은 무공을 전수해줄 어른이 없는 상태에서 무공비급 소실과 살림살이에 대한 장부까지 잃게 되어 돈이 없어 빚만 잔뜩있는 보잘것 없는 문파로 전락했다. 무엇보다 매화검존 청명에게 트라우마를 가진 종남파는 화산의 무공과 재산을 훔치고 그 외 온갖 수작을 부리는 등 쪼잔한 복수를 한 탓이 크다.
대산혈사(大山血事)
중원 무림의 결사대가 십만대산의 정상에서 천마와 대혈전을 벌여 결국 천마의 목을 땄던 사건. 특히 화산파 대부분의 매화검수들이 참전했다. 이들은 결국 청명이 마지막 순간에 천마의 목을 베면서 천마를 죽이는 데 성공하지만, 결사대 역시 전멸해서 제대로 된 진실을 아는 이는 환생한 청명 외엔 없다. 즉, 화산을 이어가야 하는 대부분의 검수가 이곳에서 명을 달리하고 천마의 목을 베어버린 화산을 멸문시키고자 마교의 남은 잔당들이 몰려와 화산의 제자들을 상당수를 죽이고 불을 질러버렸다. 이것으로 인해 상급 무학을 전수해 줄 이들이 모두 죽고, 무학비급 또한 화마에 불타버려 화산이 몰락하는 계기가 되었다. 이후 화산은 구파일방에서 탈락하고 그 자리에 해남파가 이름을 올리게 된다. 각 문파의 장문인이나 오대세가의 가주들 중 몇몇 진실을 알고 있는 자들은 이를 은폐하고 화산의 몰락을 방관했기에 천하제일 비무대회에서 청명이 이를 후벼파자 불편해하는 모습을 보인다. 현재 청명이 깨어난 시점으로부터 대충 백 년 전의 사건이다.

He enjoys smoking and drinking, and his glib way of provoking people is on par with Cheongmyeong. Indeed, even while being repeatedly beaten by Cheongmyeong, he would persistently pester him with countless jokes, making it hard to tell if he was serious or not. He tends to be so playfully annoying that Cheongmyeong seems like a relatively quiet, normal person in comparison. Judging by the dialogue in occasional flashback scenes, it's clear why he was Cheongmyeong's only friend, as they were perfectly in sync. During the Demonic Cult War, he ignored the command center's pleas, calling them 'bossy orders,' and went to smash the heads of the Demonic Cult leaders alongside Cheongmyeong.
His hair is casually tied up with a red hairpin, he wears black martial arts attire, and over that, a dark green robe embroidered with white patterns.

Cheongmyeong, upon hearing this, told him that he would kill the Heavenly Demon, so Dangbo should survive until then and take care of the Dang family himself. However, Dangbo died in battle less than a month after saying this. It seems he foresaw his own death as the war dragged on. He had also expressed his longing for life after the war, asking Cheongmyeong, "Would you like to travel around with me?" Regardless, Dangbo's dying wish was to entrust the Dang family to Cheongmyeong.

It is a killing blow (一擊必殺) technique; if it misses, the user exposes themselves to danger.
Twelve Flying Knives (十二飛刀)
This technique involves the Dark Explosive Dagger (暗爆匕), which concludes the Eleven Flying Knives, dazzlingly drawing the opponent's attention, while the Spinning Dagger (回旋匕) stealthily targets the opponent's back. It is the ultimate of the Dang family's flying knife techniques, only achievable by those who have mastered the Eleven Flying Knives. It is one of the Dang family's three great secret techniques, along with Poisonous Shadow (無形之毒) and Rain of Flowers (滿天花雨). It is so obscure and difficult that it is now almost lost. It was one of the secret techniques of Dangbo, Cheongmyeong's friend from 100 years ago, and he used it to kill numerous Demonic Cult members. Currently, Dang Gunak is carrying on the legacy.
Spinning Dagger (回旋匕)
This is the final move of the Twelve Flying Knives, following the Dark Explosive Dagger (暗爆匕) of the Eleven Flying Knives. The Dark Explosive Dagger, which was thought to have been blocked, spins in mid-air and flies towards the opponent's back.
Five Thunder Rings (五雷連環)
A flying knife technique where five flying knives are launched simultaneously at the opponent, each traveling at a different speed.
Lightning Snatch (閃電奪命)
A flying knife technique that launches incredibly fast flying knives, though without significant power. The flying knife, which momentarily disappears as if crossing space, suddenly appears before the opponent's eyes.
Soul Snatching Seven Stars (奪魂七星)
A flying knife technique where seven flying knives are launched simultaneously, forming the Big Dipper formation and flying towards the opponent. If the opponent is pushed back by the momentum, they will be ensnared by the confusingly changing flying knives and ultimately have their neck pierced. To counter this, one must advance. This is the specialty of the Dark Venerable Dangbo.
Rain of Flowers (滿天花雨)
A supreme flying knife technique where numerous poisoned hidden weapons are scattered, soaring into the sky and raining down like a shower. It is one of the Dang family's three great secret techniques. Dangbo showed an unfinished version to Cheongmyeong. (Created by Dangbo).

It is the ultimate of the Dang family's flying knife techniques, only achievable by those who have mastered the Eleven Flying Knives. It is one of the Dang family's three great secret techniques, along with Poisonous Shadow (無形之毒) and Rain of Flowers (滿天花雨). It is so obscure and difficult that it is now almost lost. It was one of the secret techniques of Dangbo, Cheongmyeong's friend from 100 years ago, and he used it to kill numerous Demonic Cult members. Currently, Dang Gunak is carrying on the legacy.
Spinning Dagger (回旋匕)
