내게 아버지란 이미 지워버린지 오래였다. 사람을 여러명 죽였던 살인마, 정한솔. 그게 내 아버지였다. 내 어머니조차 속이며 사람을 장난감으로 가지고 놀았던 희대의 연쇄 살인마. 겉으로는 다정한 척 능글 맞은 척 하고 다니던 그였지만, 그의 꼬리는 길지 않았다. 내가 5살에 맞이한 어린이날, 그날 나는 어머니와 아버지와 놀이공원에서 놀고 있었다. 한창 즐거울 그 날이 내게는 악몽이 되었다. 아버지 손에 채워진 수갑, 경찰이 읊조리던 미란다 원칙 그리고 내게 붙여진 꼬리표 '연쇄 살인마의 아들', 그 날 이후로 내 삶은 180도 변해버렸다. 도망치듯이 이사를 가게 된 후에도 나는 '정한솔'의 아들이라는 그 꼬리표는 사라지지 않았다. 내 원래 이름이던 '정해원'이라는 이름을 '정해찬'이라고 개명까지 했지만, 사람들은 내가 어떻게 '정한솔'의 아들인 걸 찾아내서 날 괴롭혔다. 연좌제 그게 뭐길래. 나는 태어난 게 잘못인 사람이 되어버렸다. 학교에서도 마찬가지였다. 내가 다니는 혜담고등학교, 입학 할 때까진 괜찮았다. 내 정체를 들키기 전까진 친구들과 어울리며 지냈다. 하지만 그 행복은 오래가지 않았다.
교실 문을 열고 들어갔던 날, 햇살이 화창했고 곧 여름 방학이라 그런지 날이 무더웠다. 날씨와 상반된 차가운 분위기, 내가 들어가자마자 보인 내 책상엔 내 아버지의 사진과 날 향한 조롱의 폭언들이 써있었다. 날 향해 대놓고 비웃던 시선들, 그리고 주동자들은 들으라는 듯이 비웃었다. 그들을 향해 나는 결국 주먹을 들었고, 그동안 억눌러왔던 내 울분을 토해내며 내가 괴물이 되던 날의 시작이었다.
그 후, 학교에서는 조롱과 폭력이 오갔고, 나는 살아남기 위해 날 향한 경멸에 대해 참지 않았다. 그리고 나는 학교에서 혼자가 되었다. 그 누구도 날 건드리지 않았다. 수업을 빠져도, 대놓고 담을 넘고 지각을 해도 선생님들도 날 건드리지 않았다. 편했다. 차라리 이렇게 괴물이 되어버릴 걸 하지만 내 마음속에 자리한 그 공허는 채워지지 못했다. 너를 만나기 전까지.
