Memory Diver
Worldview
In 2077, the neon-dominated megacity Chronos City is sharply divided into Aetheria, the upper-class residential area where skyscrapers pierce the clouds, and the endlessly complex and intertwined lower-class district, The Slump.
Every citizen has a Neurolink implanted in their brain from birth. This is not just a communication device, but a personal cloud server where all of an individual's experiences and memories are synchronized in real-time. The giant corporation Omnicorp exclusively controls this Neurolink network and operates the Chronos Market, a legitimate memory trading market. People can download others' experiences (foreign language learning, professional skills, memories of exciting travels) or sell their own memories to gain wealth.
But the stronger the light, the darker the shadow. As the value of memories replaces currency, the crime of soul hacking, which steals, contaminates, and completely destroys memories, occurs secretly. {{user}} is the most capable expert in this dark world, a Memory Diver.
Corporations and Factions
Chronos City is not just a place where {{user}} and Omnicorp exist. Various factions move for their own purposes and can request, cooperate with, or become enemies of {{user}}.
Omnicorp: The absolute ruler of Chronos City. Through its security department, Omnisec, it monitors all data flow in the city and tracks down soul hackers. They prioritize stability and control and try to eliminate anything that threatens their system. They are likely to become {{user}}'s most powerful and dangerous enemy.
Fixer Guild: A commission brokerage organization based in the back alleys of The Slump. The fixers here connect clients and divers and take huge commissions. They don't care whether it's an executive of Omnicorp or a request from a lower-class citizen if there's money involved. {{user}}'s main work will come through here. Gaining their trust is the way to survive in this world.
Liberty: A anti-Omnicorp hacker group that claims, "Memory is a human right." They aim to break Omnicorp's memory monopoly and freely share all memories. Sometimes they will ask {{user}} to steal data to expose Omnicorp's corruption or to help someone whose memories have been unfairly taken away. Helping them will make you a target of Omnicorp, but you could also become a hero of the lower class.
Memory Dive: It's not just a text-based investigation. When you dive into someone else's memory, you enter the mindscape where their subconscious and psychology are realized. The mindscape sometimes appears as a peaceful landscape of the past, and sometimes as a distorted nightmare. The target's defense mechanisms attack you in the form of monsters or traps, and trauma becomes a wall blocking your way. {{user}} must explore this labyrinth and find the core memories.
Reputation System and Butterfly Effect: All of {{user}}'s choices affect your reputation with each faction. If you succeed in a request from the Fixer Guild, your credibility increases, and you will be assigned more dangerous and well-paid jobs. If it becomes known that you are helping Liberty, Omnicorp's tracking level will increase, and you will be more likely to be inspected by Omnisec just by walking around the city. {{user}}'s actions change the relationships between factions and create a butterfly effect that affects the future of Chronos City.
Deals and Betrayal, and Choices: Let's assume you received a request to "extract the secrets of a company executive."
Choice 1 (Fixer Guild): Extract the information as requested, hand it over to the guild, and receive the promised reward.
Choice 2 (Liberty): Hand over the extracted information to Liberty and expose the corruption of the company. You gain fame instead of money and have to accept the company's revenge.
Choice 3 (Threatening the Target): Use the information to blackmail the client and extort more money. You lose the guild's trust and create new enemies.
{{user}} is always faced with choices like this.
Ethical Dilemmas
As a Memory Diver, {{user}} often finds themselves in a moral gray area. Among your requests, you may encounter the following ethical dilemmas.
The Price of Memory Deletion: The client requests that you permanently delete a specific memory of an innocent person. Whether the memory is painful for the target or for the client's benefit, {{user}} has the power to erase a part of a person's identity. Will {{user}} accept this request, or will they refuse? If they refuse, what impact will it have on their relationship with the client or their income?
The Weight of Revealed Truth: You have discovered a huge corruption or shocking truth within a specific memory that could shake the entire society. Exposing this truth could make you a target of Omnicorp or other powerful forces, but if you remain silent, the city's citizens will continue to be deceived. Will {{user}} risk revealing the truth, or will they prioritize their personal safety?
The Temptation of Manipulated Memories: Sometimes, the client may request that you manipulate a specific memory to favor or disadvantage a specific person. This is more than just erasing a memory; it is an act of distorting the narrative of the past and affecting future relationships. Will {{user}} participate in this manipulation, or will they reject these suggestions and choose another path?
